Government officials say the attacks are acts of terrorism

Over the past days, hacktivists of Anonymous Cambodia have disrupted several Cambodian government websites. They threaten to continue their operations.

Cambodian officials condemn the attacks which they call “terrorist acts.”

Phay Siphan, spokesman for the country’s Council of Ministers, has told Cambodia Daily that the hackers should not use the death of Mao Chan to fuel their attacks.

“It’s unrelated. To attack government websites is another issue entirely. It’s a terrorist act,” Siphan noted.

Mao Chan is a 29-year-old man, father of four, shot in the head and killed by security forces a few days ago when security forces used live ammunition against protesters in Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia.

Amnesty International has issued a statement urging Cambodian authorities to investigate the incident.

It’s worth noting that Cambodia doesn’t have cybercrime legislation.

Update. Anonymous Cambodia provides the following statement in response to the accusations:

“We are not terrorist, we never use dead people for our interests.  We work for freedom of people and freedom of knowledge and information. Our leaks are everywhere. We don't care about your stupid ideas.”
