The hype is understandable, but let’s not get carried away

A so-called iPhone 6 leak from Aussie Sonny Dickson made a ridiculous number of headlines this week, even after being confirmed as utterly fake.

An Australian fellow, who last year made waves with photos of unreleased hardware, became the center of attention again on Thursday, this time for posting what seemed to be photos depicting the next-generation iPhone 6.

We reported on the leak with skepticism and started asking around to see what other people thought of the so-called leak. Not surprisingly, few actually bought into it.

One of the people we asked to look at the photos was Dutch designer Martin Hajek, who is the author of numerous iPhone concepts and who openly admits to selling his designs for others to play with.

Hajek immediately confirmed to us that Dickson’s “leaked” photos were, in fact, nothing more than renderings based on his own iPhone concepts – mockups created with 3D (CAD) design software.

His newest works proved so realistic that someone apparently decided they’d manipulate the imagery and turn it into an iPhone 6 leak that everyone would believe. With Hajek having confirmed our suspicions, Softpedia debunked the leak.

But the headlines kept on coming: “iPhone 6 Leaked,” “Leaked Imaged Show iPhone 6,” etc. And it became evident why this was happening. It’s been four years since Apple lost a totally redesigned prototype in the wild. No wonder people will scoop up just about anything that looks like a totally new iPhone.

But the reality is Apple hasn't lost any prototypes this time around. iPhone 6 remains a mystery, even though it may end up looking exactly like those pictures would have you believe.
