Calligra 2.8.3, an integrated suite of applications for office, creative, and management needs, is now available for download and it's one of the biggest updates for this branch.

This version of Calligra, 2.8.3, is just a maintenance release, but even if the previous iteration had very few fixes and changes, this new update is actually larger and more important.

“This is the third (and last but one) update to the 2.8 series of the Calligra Suite, and Calligra Active released to fix recently found issues. The Calligra team recommends everybody to update,” said the developers in the official announcement. This means that the next version will probably be 2.9 or even higher.

The Calligra suite is actually made of three major components: office applications (Words, Stage, Sheets, Flow, and Kexi), graphics applications, (Krita, Karbon), and project management (Plan).

According to the changelog, support has been implemented for line breaks when reading the OpenDocument Format, a bug in the style manager for filters has been added, the text shape (specifically the dock panel) is now working with Windows 8.1, and support has been added for 1904-based XLS files, normally created by Excel on Mac OS X.

Kexi, the database creator from the Calligra suite, has also received a lot of attention. For example, a crash that occurred when closing the form design window has been fixed, the context menu now works for the tables in Query Designer, a crash that occurred in the Debug GUI when trying to modify table field has been fixed, the list of SQL keywords reserved for KexiSQL, SQLite, MySQL, and PostgreSQL has been updated, and a number of resource leaks have been removed.

Krita, an application that is used to make digital painting files from scratch, has also got numerous changes. For example, the fix for the outline of the invert selection has been added, the detection of supported image formats is now much better, support has been implemented for the selection of GMIC filters, the last used preset is now remembered across sessions, and more.

A complete list of changes and updates can be found in the official changelog. You can download the Calligra 2.8.3 sources right now from Softpedia.

The current version of the software also runs on mobile platforms, namely Calligra Mobile and Calligra Active. Users of any previous iterations have been asked to update as soon as possible, either by compiling the new build or by using the provided methods.
