Call of Juarez: The Cartel has just been announced by Ubisoft, its publisher, and Techland, its developer, and will take the Western shooter series in a brand new direction because it's going to take place in the modern day.

Ubisoft's Call of Juarez western shooter series received some mixed acclaim, both for the first title and its sequel, subtitled Bound in Blood, which told of intriguing stories set in the Wild West and during the American Civil War.

Now though, things are really changing for the series developed by Techland, as the newest iteration, The Cartel, is going to take place in modern day Los Angeles.

According to Ubisoft, Call of Juarez: The Cartel brings "the best elements of the Wild West to a new and modern setting".

"As a first person shooter with an immersive and mature story, players can expect to embark on a journey like no other - one that will take them from the heart of modern day Los Angeles, California to Juarez, Mexico," it says.

The title will keep its shooter gameplay, but it seems that the Wild West guns are going to be swapped out with more modern ones, as seen in the two screenshots below.

"Call of Juarez The Cartel is an action-packed shooter game with a strong story, interesting characters and a wide variety of gameplay options," said Caroline Stevens, EMEA brand director at Ubisoft.

"The game will bring the best elements of the Wild West into modern times with a very gritty and relevant plot."

Expect more details to appear in the near future, as the game is set to be launched this summer, so we'll receive a lot of new content until then.

Games magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly is set to have an extensive cover story on the title tomorrow, so perhaps more official information will be revealed at the end of the week.

Given this big shift to the modern day, do you think Call of Juarez: The Cartel will be able to attract players more than its predecessors? Check out the two pieces of art below and then share your thoughts in the comment section.
