Just before Christmas, FIFA 2009 from EA Sports took the top spot in the United Kingdom Top 40 of videogames, pushing Call of Duty: World at War, published by Activision Blizzard and developed by Treyarch, to number two. Now, in a surprising reversal, the latest installment in the Call of Duty series has staged a comeback and begins 2009 at number 1.

As always, Chart Track, which puts together the Top 40, has not offered actual sales figures, but has revealed that Call of Duty: World at War is the best selling game on both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, while being the second best sold game on the PC. FIFA 09 is at number two, while Need for Speed Undercover, from Electronic Arts, is at number three, on its way up from four, despite the fact that the future of the series is in doubt and the game has been panned by critics.

Nintendo made titles occupy the fourth and fifth places, with Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit continuing to sell well even if they were released in the first half of 2008. Tom Raider Underworld is in sixth spot, jumping up from number nine.

Guitar Hero: World Tour is at number seven, proving that the sales potential of music games is not yet exhausted, while Quantum of Solace, a game based on the James Bond franchise, is at number eight, making Treyarch a truly rare phenomenon, a videogame developer that has two titles in the Top Ten at the same time. Two Sonic powered games, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games and Sonic Unleashed, occupy places nine and ten.

Wii Fit inexplicably went on a downward spiral, going from number ten to 33, while Mirror's Edge, from Electronic Arts, went up in sales from number 36 to 21, and LittleBigPlanet, from Media Molecule and Sony, is at number 22.
