The team at Sledgehammer Games might be leading the development of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare at the moment, but their first job for publisher Activision was to work on a title that was supposed to use Vietnam as a setting and would have delivered a darker and grittier experience.

This is the first feeling that fans will have when taking a look at the concept art that was created for the now shelved game way back in 2009 by an artist called Eddie del Rio, who has also worked on other properties, like Star Citizen and Godzilla.

Sledgehammer Games and Activision have never offered many details about the video game that was supposed to take place in Vietnam and it seems that many of the core mechanics were not fully fleshed out before it was canceled, at some point in 2010.

The developers have said that they would like to have another chance to make the experience they envisioned, but it is unlikely that this will happen, given their current commitments.

Sledgehammer Games joined forces with the team at Infinity Ward in order to launch Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on time and they are at the moment the leading studio working on Advanced Warfare.

The new installment in the first-person shooter experience is due to be launched on the PC, the PlayStation 4 from Sony, the Xbox One from Microsoft and current-gen consoles on November 4 of this year.

The story will take place in 2054 and will focus on futuristic combat gear, including exoskeletons and hover bikes, and the potential that they have to transform warfare and give a Private Military Company a chance to go toe to toe with the most powerful national forces in the world.

Sledgehammer Games has promised that it is aiming to deliver some innovative ideas in order to make the long-running franchise feel fresh and interesting again, while keeping the features that define it.

Advanced Warfare will get more details from the studio in the coming months and a leak has already showed that two major factions will be offered to those who want to take part in multiplayer matches.

Call of Duty is at the moment on a three-year development cycle, with Treyarch set to deliver a game in 2015 and Infinity Ward in charge of the title that is set to arrive in 2016.
