Video game publisher Activision announces that it is moving its main franchise, Call of Duty, to a three-year launch cycle and that Sledgehammer Games has been added to the rotation, set to deliver a title later during this year.

Until now, just two studios, Infinity Ward and Treyarch, were able to create on the series, says CVG.

The first company is associated with Call of Duty: Ghosts and will probably continue to work on that narrative thread, while Treyarch will likely continue to develop Black Ops.

It's unclear whether Sledgehammer Games will join one of the two timelines mentioned or it will create its own unique take on the first-person shooter franchise.

Activision is not yet willing to offer any sort of information on the Call of Duty experience that will be launched during the fall of this year.
