Gamers will be able to get a taste of the new content drop

Video game publisher Activision Blizzard and developer Infinity Ward have announced that they will launch a Double XP Weekend for their first-person shooter, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, in order to celebrate the launch of the latest content pack for the multiplayer mode of the game.

Those gamers who choose to log into the multiplayer mode of the game on the Xbox 360 home console from Microsoft will get a message that reads: “DLC Collection 1 is available for purchase now. New MP maps and SO Missions await you. Plus, earn Double XP this weekend.”

The message does not appear for those who play on the PlayStation 3 from Sony or the PC, which might mean that these platforms will not get the Double XP Weekend or that an official announcement for them might come later.

Traditionally, weekends that grant gamers double the usual number of experience points for Call of Duty have been launched during the afternoon of Friday on the Pacific Standard Time timezone and end at the same time on Monday.

Double XP Weekends are a good way of drawing back players who have bought Modern Warfare 3 but have since that failed to engage with it, because of lack of new content or because they were playing other recent big releases.

The Double XP initiative is being introduced just as developer and publisher have launched yet another content drop for Modern Warfare 3, which includes both new maps and new Special Ops missions.

The new areas to battle on are: Liberation, Piazza, Overwatch and Black Box.

The new mission is called Black Ice and Negotiator.

Activision plans to deliver more content drops for the most recent Call of Duty during the coming months in an effort to make the game a yearlong event rather than simply a season launch.
