The developers working on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 at Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games have not set out to make the game controversial, despite the fact that some players might be shocked by what they play.
Bret Robbins, who is the creative director working at
Sledgehammer Games, has told Venture Beat, that, “What you don’t do is say, we’re just doing this to top ourselves. It needs to be something that’s authentic, that actually moves the plot forward.”
He says that there are shocking moments in Modern Warfare 3 but they have a value apart from simply generating headlines and pushing the player outside of his comfort zone.
He added, “You always want to push yourself and see if you can push the limits of the medium, and storytelling. We’ve got such a big audience for this game that we want to deliver something that’s memorable. Experiences that people are going to be talking about the next day after they played it, talking about with their friends. It’s really a matter of creating something unique.”
Speaking about the famous and controversial No Russian mission in Modern Warfare 2 Robbins said that the developers were interested in showing gamers what war was actually like and how an actual terrorist attack would impact the United States.
A lot of people said that No Russian handled the theme of the terrorist attack badly, without showing the actual effects on civilians while restricting the ability of the player to choose how to reach to the events of the game.
Modern Warfare 3 will again tell the story of a clash between the United States and Russia, with multiple view points used to show how the war affects people.
The success of the Call of Duty experience was always based on the multiplayer but the developers have always insisted on creating single player campaigns that deliver over the top action.
