14 DAY TRIAL // Robert Bowling, the creative strategist of Infinity Ward, one of the developers of the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, talked about the brewing rivalry between the title and Battlefield 3, while confirming that he'll buy the rival game, largely because it offers a different experience than Call of Duty.
This fall is set to host a major battle between Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Electronic Arts' Battlefield 3, two military-themed first-person shooters with large fan communities and fiercely loyal audiences.
But Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling is quite sure that there's enough room on the shooter market for both titles, especially since they deliver different experiences that are sure to please many players.
"I'm very aware that we have two very different audiences and we're delivering two very good and very different experiences, so I think the baiting is built up more of these two really passionate communities – and they should be really passionate about their individual games – getting at each other, and that's been happening forever," Bowling told Eurogamer.
The Infinity Ward man confirmed that he will, in fact, buy a copy of Battlefield 3 on October 26, when it is released, but is also going to enjoy Modern Warfare 3 on November 8, when it's going to be deployed.
"I think there is definitely room. If you are a shooter fan, you should be getting both, because they're both going to be excellent experiences. But more importantly they're going to be very different experiences. The kind of gameplay you get from Call of Duty is very different from what you get anywhere else and I think that's important. I think any shooter fan would be extremely disappointed if you only got one."
Even if Bowling considers the two games to be different, they will both fight over the same basic audience, right before the extremely busy holiday season, so not many gamers will afford to buy both titles at the same time.
