The developer tried implementing lots of new and fun ideas

The different multiplayer modes in Call of Duty: Ghosts will emphasize fun over competition, as developer Infinity Ward realized that it had lost focus with previous installments in the series in terms of the online experience.

Call of Duty games are mostly about the multiplayer and the different modes that are present within it. The upcoming CoD: Ghosts will try to deliver more variety and a lot more fun in terms of the online experience, as Infinity Ward changed its development strategy when talking about new modes.

"We took the list of game modes and we cut them all way," Infinity Ward Executive Producer Mark Rubin told GameInformer. "Every single mode we’ve ever done, let’s take off the game board for me."

Instead of pitching new modes, developers created working prototypes, using the maps from previous games, and tweaked them based on feedback from other members of the team.

The result is a new multiplayer experience that feels fresher than all previous games, according to Rubin.

"I feel like with Ghosts, we didn’t bloat. We cut a lot. Fans are going to like that. Some people won’t. And we know that," he said. We wanted it to be its own game."

What's more, Rubin admitted that, with previous games, the studio focused a bit too much on making the multiplayer highly competitive, while losing track of making it fun in the process.

"We were a little too serious about multiplayer and we concentrated too much on making sure it was super competitive," he added. "Then, for Modern Warfare 3, we introduced this idea of community playlists, community maps, and community modes. Let’s not worry about whether or not this game is fair, competitively. Let’s just make it fun."

Call of Duty: Ghosts will be released in early November for PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U, and in late November for PS4 and Xbox One.
