Treyarch, the studio behind the massively successful Call of Duty: Black Ops game, revealed through the voice of its game design director that a near-future Call of Duty title would be "fantastic."

The studio proved that it was more than Activision's second Call of Duty team with Black Ops, a title that managed to break sales records and become the most important entertainment launch of last year.

Now, after the studio has just pushed the newest downloadable content for Black Ops, the First Strike map pack, its game design director, David Vonderhaar, talked with Machinima about Treyarch's next project.

When asked if the studio would consider making a new Call of Duty title that is set in the future, Vonderhaar said that , "I think the answer is 'yes.'"

"I think it would be kind of a unique opportunity but the way that this works out is obviously more complicated than 'Hey. Me and Treyarch are going to make a near-future shooter.'"

"It's a tough question to answer. We have not announced any new Call of Duty games at this time but to answer his specific question I think, personally, it would be pretty fantastic to do near-future, you know? Not necessarily far-future."

Activision's Call of Duty has only dealt with past conflicts, like World War II or the Cold War, seen in Treyarch's World at War or Black Ops games, and present, yet fictional ones, seen in Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare series.

There were a lot of rumors last year, however, that the company's newest studio, Sledgehammer Games, is working on a Call of Duty game from the future.

This was backed up by Activision registering domain names back in May of 2010, for the likes of Call of Duty: Future Warfare, Advanced Warfare, Secret Warfare and Space Warfare.

As of yet, however, the fate of the Call of Duty series is still shrouded in mystery, with Activision preparing an announcement for later this year, probably at the E3 expo this summer.
