Developer Treyarch and publisher Activision are saying that their first-person shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops will be getting its first ever double experience weekend starting next Friday in order to celebrate the launch of the First Strike downloadable content, which is only delivered on the Xbox 360 home console from Microsoft.
Initial reports about the
Double XP period appeared on the Major Nelson podcast, but only the Microsoft platform was mentioned as taking part in the promotional period.
Then Josh Olin, who is in charge of managing the player community for developer Treyarch, also sent out a Twitter message, saying, “The first ever #CODBlackOps Double-XP Weekend will be Feb. 4th - 6th on all platforms. #FirstStrike available Feb. 1 on #360.”
He confirms that the PC and the PlayStation 3 are also involved even though they do not have access to the First Strike map pack.
The Double XP weekend starts on Friday, February 6 and ends two days later on Sunday, with all the companies involved hoping that it will attract gamers to the first-person shooter and will lead to bigger sales for the newly launched First Strike.
Microsoft has announced that the map pack is a timed exclusive, but no information has offered on when those playing on the PC or on the PlayStation 3 will be getting access to the content included in
First Strike.
Judging by previous experience with map pack delivered for Modern Warfare 2, the wait will probably be about one month long.
Activision has already said that it plans to launch at least two map packs for Call of Duty: Black Ops, with the second one probably coming during the summer.
The publisher is also working on a new
Call of Duty game, which will be launched later in the year, but no details or official confirmation of the developer has so far been offered.
