Video game publisher Activision and developer Treyarch have announced that they have launched a demo version for their first person shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops, allowing all those interested to play through one of the most interesting levels of the game, called WMD.

Those who have not bought the game and have not seen it in action can download the demo from the Xbox Live Marketplace and from the PlayStation Network.

The included mission is interesting because it mixes traditional first-person shooting segments, where a ground-based team needs to infiltrate a heavily defended Russian base which controls the launch of nuclear weapons, but mixes the boots on the ground action with a view from a stealth SR-71 aircraft that needs to show the commandos what route will keep them safe in their assault.

The mission offers a good view of what Call of Duty: Black Ops has to offer and might persuade a few more players to buy it.

The launch of the demo comes just as the PC and the PlayStation 3 platforms get access to the First Strike, the first downloadable content pack for the game, which includes new maps for the multiplayer segment of the shooter.

Xbox 360 gamers have had access to it since early February.

Treyarch and Activision have said that Call of Duty will be getting a second DLC pack at some point in late spring or early summer and that it will also initially be exclusive to the Microsoft home console.

It's not clear why Activision waited for so long to deliver a demo for Call of Duty and why it did not try to promote the game with a free multiplayer weekend, showcasing the part of the game that is the most played in the long run.

A new Call of Duty game will arrive late during 2011, although Activision has not said who will develop it.
