The largest American video game retailer, GameStop, has revealed that the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops has already beaten its predecessor, the record-breaking Modern Warfare 2, in terms of pre-orders, setting a new all-time record in the process.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 went on to become the world's most successful entertainment launch last year, thanks to aggressive marketing and lots of hype after the critically acclaimed Modern Warfare 1, managing to sell well over 20 million copies around the world.

Now, with Treyarch preparing to launch a new Call of Duty title, called Black Ops, anticipation is even greater than before, and Activision couldn't be happier.

According to the leading U.S. game retailer, GameStop, Black Ops has already overtaken Modern Warfare 2 in terms of pre-orders, and has set a new all-time record this year.

"GameStop is tracking to all-time, record reservations on Call of Duty: Black Ops," said Bob McKenzie, the firm's SVP of merchandising.

"We are ahead of where we were with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 last year, which previously set the industry standard."

This is no doubt music to the ears of the game's publisher, Activision Blizzard, which has already pledged to market Black Ops even more intensively than Modern Warfare 2, in order to prove the power of the Call of Duty brand.

What's more, Activision wants the Treyarch developed title to become the biggest entertainment launch of the year, and overtake blockbuster movies like Avatar or Inception, and, of course, overtake Modern Warfare 2.

Don't forget that GameStop is also offering those who pre-order Black Ops the chance to win in its "Surprize Attack" sweepstakes, which is holding 34 daily draws until the game will be launched.

Call of Duty: Black Ops is set to arrive on November 9 for the PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii.
