Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, a direct sequel to last year's record-breaking Black Ops shooter, isn't being ruled out by the game's developer, Treyarch.

Activision's Call of Duty series is breaking records left and right, as after the massive success of 2009's Modern Warfare 2, which arrived from Infinity Ward, last year's Black Ops became the best-selling game of all time, shifting 13.7 million in the US alone.

Now, its developer, Treyarch, has revealed that it doesn't exactly exclude the possibility to release a direct sequel to the game, a Black Ops 2, effectively making it its own spinoff series, just like Infinity Ward did with Modern Warfare.

Speaking with the Official Xbox Magazine UK, via CVG, Treyarch community manager Josh Olin said that the matter of a sequel is still up in the air.

"We're so happy with Black Ops - it was incredible. Everyone hoped it would have this kind of success. We all knew how well MW2 did [in 2009], breaking all entertainment records, so the fact that Black Ops broke through it for a second year in a row and reset that record was incredible. We're still really glad that we hit the ground with the DLC when we finished the game, because we knew we wanted to get it back out there."

Call of Duty: Black Ops is currently the second highest-grossing game of all time, managing to reach sales of $787.4 million since its official release in November last year, being overtaken only by Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, which managed to achieve sales of $830.9 million, but was launched back in 2007.

Treyarch launched the first downloadable content pack for Black Ops at the start of February, in the form of the First Strike Map Pack, which is now present on almost all platforms, including the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, except the Nintendo Wii.

This year's new Call of Duty game is expected to be revealed later this month and, according to previous reports, might be Modern Warfare 3.
