PC owners can now engage in the multiplayer mode of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 for free throughout the weekend via the Steam digital distribution service.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is set to receive the Uprising DLC this month on the PC and PlayStation 3 platforms, so developer Treyarch decided to run a special Double XP weekend in the following days and even made the game's multiplayer mode completely free-to-play on the PC via Steam.

Starting today, May 10, until Sunday, May 12, all Steam users can download the game's multiplayer portion and play it for as long as they want.

If players enjoy the online experience, they can buy the game with a special 33% discount for either the standard edition of the Digital Deluxe one. The Season Pass, however, hasn't received any price cut.

Activision and other companies are introducing such free-to-play weekends in order to show gamers the kind of experiences that they can have and to persuade them to then buy the titles.

The multiplayer of Call of Duty has been the biggest draw for the franchise but for newcomers it will be relatively hard to compete with the more established fans.
