The single-player campaigns in past Call of Duty games were extremely linear and mostly involved the player having to follow a squad mate, defend certain locations, man turrets or control different vehicles and aircraft.

In Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, you still do quite a lot of these things but, unlike previous titles, you have a much bigger degree of choice in terms of how you go through the single-player levels.

The regular missions see the player go through all sorts of adventures both in the 1980s as well as in the near future of 2025. While you can still complete them like in previous games, by following your objectives and sticking to your squad mates, you unlock quite a few special things by straying off the beaten path.

These levels contain special areas where an “Access” message will pop up. Using your special tools, you can use the various bonuses that are hidden in them. These range from a flak jacket that will help you withstand explosive damage, to special bonus weapons, like Molotov cocktails, smoke bombs.

They can even represent access to new gameplay options, during one portion of a level you can unlock a path for your mechanized walkers that will then be able to provide support during the following section.

All these choices provide immediate results so it always pays off to explore the map in its entirety because you never known what you might uncover that will make your life that much easier.

The presence of these little side objectives have certainly made the single-player missions more exciting, just like in actual role-playing games, as you’re no longer just progressing forward in order to unlock the next scripted sequence. Instead, you’re actively exploring and trying to find hidden nooks and crannies for special bonuses.

Did you enjoy these side objectives in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2’s story or did you just try to complete it as fast as possible?
