Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will probably be a success mostly because of the multiplayer changes that Sledgehammer Games will make to the traditional foundations of the series, but the company says that it also wants to make the single-player element of the title relevant again.

Glen Schofield, one of the co-founders of the studio, tells VentureBeat that a lot of time and resources were focused on the narrative threads that gamers will follow and that all players will be able to see how personal and intimate it can be.

The developer states, “It’s about friendship and working together with the guy in the fox hole. It’s personal stuff. Emotional times. It’s about life, family, pain, and loss. We made sure we didn’t have a nation-state as the enemy. Is it going to be China? Is it going to be North Korea? Who’s going to be fighting us?”

The main antagonist in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will be a Private Military Company, which is modelled on a variety of outfits that are currently operating in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

Main character Private Mitchell will give the player his own opinions about the situation he is in and will express a variety of emotions, showing that even hardened veterans can feel loss and pain.

Schofield also says that much of the inspiration for the single player came from a new breed of television series that mix action and emotions.

He adds, “We saw this rise of great TV, with The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and House of Cards. We wrote the story with Kevin Spacey in mind, not knowing we would get him.”

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will offer more information about the changes made to multiplayer on August 11 during a special event.

Sledgehammer Games has already said that it will introduce a number of innovations that will surprise veterans of the series and will attract a range of new players at the same time.

Activision has said that it is moving the Call of Duty series to a three-year development cycle in order to give each team more time to polish the experience and deliver a high quality title to the large fan base.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will be out on November 4 and can be played on the Xbox One from Microsoft, the PlayStation 4 from Sony, the PC and last-gen consoles.
