Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, 1 Unit Sold Per Second!

- Are we talking about the real Game of the Year now?

By: Calin Ciabai, Games Editor

2007 was, without doubt, one of the best years in the history regarding the game world. With so many exemplary titles released, with so many nearly-perfect games it feels
kind of strange when you think that only one was the best. Fortunately, we're just talking about sales, otherwise we'd have endless debates till 2020. And the winner is... Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Activision has announced that its game was the #1 title in units worldwide for calendar 2007, according to The NPD Group, Chart Track and The GFK Group. What does this mean? Well, it seems that COD4 sold over 7 million copies worldwide since its launch in November, which means that 2.3 million units were sold per month, 80,000 per day or 1 unit per second. And have in mind that these are only some approximate calculations, since January is not over yet!

As expected, the Activision board is extremely happy with these results: "We’re very excited about this achievement especially given so many competitive titles this year," said Will Kassoy, senior vice president, global brand management, Activision. "Consumer and critics agree that COD4 is one of the best games ever created and further establishes Call of Duty as one of the premier brands in the industry. This ground-breaking game and franchise continue to establish new standards by which all other action games will be judged."

And if you think that 1 unit sold per second is not enough, you should know that COD4 scored "perfect" according to 18 game reviews and it has over 40 combined Editors’ Choice and Game of the Year awards in the U.S. alone. So we are talking now about a game that set some real and hard to beat landmarks. Does this mean that COD4 is the real Game of the Year? Activision surely thinks so!
