Legislators claim bonfires harm the environment, threaten public health

Air pollution is bad. It harms natural ecosystems, sometimes beyond repair, and it threatens public health. Still, banning bonfires on grounds that they constitute a major source of pollution seems a bit extreme.

As wacky as it may sound, legislators in California are now looking into the possibility of outlawing beach bonfires.

They say that, according to several studies, the ecological footprint of one bonfire is the same as that of a diesel truck that's been sent on a 500-mile-long cruise across the country, Opposing Views reports.

Not the mention the fact that the smoke released by these beach fires can really take its toll on one's wellbeing.

Several beach-goers and bonfire-enthusiasts have started a petition asking that legislators give up the idea of banning bonfires.

“Southern California’s fire rings are an invaluable part of our beach culture and outdoor experience. For more than 60 years, they have given families and friends an affordable place to sit under the stars and celebrate the beauty of our beaches, and surrounding environment,” they say.
