This latest ban targets people living in or visiting the city of San Rafael

This past Monday, high officials in San Rafael, California voted unanimously in favor of a city-wide plastic bags ban. This basically means that people living in or visiting this area will no longer be able to use such bags when shopping.

According to Eco Watch, plastic bags are a common sight on beaches across the state of California.

Apart from the fact that they take the fun out of enjoying a quiet day in the sun (just imagine going for a walk, tripping on one and landing face first in the sand), these bags endanger wildlife.

Thus, many marine animals, including fish and turtles, have high chances to mistake them with food, eat them and become very sick, maybe even die, as a result.

The good news is that California is making good progress towards sorting out this issue.

In fact, it would appear that the plastic bag ban that the San Rafael City Council instituted at the beginning of this week is the 100th of its kind to have until now been set in place in California.

This means that one in three of the people in this state lives in an area where the use of plastic bags has been outlawed.

Commenting on the City Council's decision to ban plastic bags in San Rafael, Nathan Weaver with Environment California stated as follows:

“This important step forward for San Rafael shows yet again that we can achieve lasting victories for ocean and environmental health.”

“The experience of 100 communities and one in three Californians shows that banning plastic bags is the right choice to protect our rivers, beaches and the Pacific Ocean,” he added.
