A three-year-old toddler who was living with his parents in a suburb of Los Angeles in California fell from a third-story window and was saved by a couple who was moving out of their apartment. Luckily for the little boy, the couple managed to strategically place a box spring mattress to catch the child before he plunged to the ground.

Digital Journal informs that the incident happened on Sunday afternoon, when Konrad and Jennifer Lightner were removing their belongings from their old apartment in Burbank, CA.

At around 5:30 p.m., they went into the building to collect another load and they saw the toddler hanging from a telephone wire outside a third-story window. Apparently, the boy was playing with her sister throwing toys out of their apartment window and somehow the boy ended up dangling from a cord.

The couple called emergency responders, but luckily they managed to rescue the boy before the Burbank Fire Department crew arrived at the scene. They saved the toddler's life by placing a mattress underneath him at the right moment, in the right position.

The child survived the dramatic fall with just some minor bruises and was taken to Children's Hospital in Los Angeles for observation.

The Lightners say that when they realized the child was never going to be able to get back inside the apartment, they knew they had to do their best to save him.

Apparently, Konrad grabbed onto the boy as he fell and then let him down on the box spring mattress. He practically caught him in the air, saving his life.

The saver said the whole thing seemed “surreal,” as it was pure coincidence that they were carrying a mattress at the exact moment when the incident happened.

And it really was a lucky coincidence, as when the couple were taking the mattress out of the building, they got stuck in the elevator, and it took them 30 minutes to be freed. They believe if that didn't happen, they would not have been there at the right moment to rescue the boy.

“It was very surreal afterwards. We were just moving the rest of the day and every once in a while we'd look at each other and just be like, ‘That happened. That was real’,” Jennifer added.

Royce Nix, one of the paramedics who responded to the incident, said “It's one of the most wonderful things I have ever seen.”

The boy’s father, who was apparently at home at the time of the incident, was completely unaware of what was happening. He thanked Lightner for saving his son’s life after neighbors told him what happened.
