The Calibre eBook reader, editor, and library management software has advanced to version 1.48, bringing a number of new features and various changes.

Calibre is a software that can be used for numerous tasks, like reading, converting, and managing eBooks, so it stands to reason that any new features that might get added will be related to these functions.

According to the changelog, the list of bookmarks is now a dockable window that can be kept open while reading the book, the Table of Contents panel is a dockable window so it can be moved around and even made into a separate floating window, reloading the current book is now possible by pressing F5 or Ctrl+R, changing the case of selected text by right clicking and choosing the appropriate change case action is now possible, a driver for Kiano Booky Light has been added, the --for-machine function now dumps the output in JSON instead of using ASCII separators, and filenames are now completed inside EPUB files for ebook-edit.

Also, specifying multiple internal files to open is now allowed, the --edit-file option has been removed, an over-aggressive caching problem that was causing the multiple cover grid emblem rules not to work has been fixed, position syncing and Live CSS are now working properly if the opening tag has been split over multiple lines, choosing default dictionary based on language tag in the OPF is no longer ignoring the country code, and a regression that caused tags to not be sorted when displayed in the book details panel has been corrected.

Most of the recent updates for Calibre brought various improvements to the Editing function, but now the developer has made some time for some of the more trivial and regular improvements. This may not be a major update, but it's definitely one that you need to get.

Installing the latest version of Calibre is quite easy, as the developer provides a simple script to do all that. It should be platform-independent, but some users might not be able to run it.

Users can also download the source package and try to compile it. It has many dependencies, so that might be an issue. The only other alternative is to get it from the repositories, but you might not get the latest release.
