The 1.11.0 version of the eBook reader and management software Calibre was announced on November 15. The developer of Calibre is making great strides with the software, and this week, he integrated a lot of new features, including a very important driver.

According to the changelog, Calibre now comes with support for the new firmware version 3.0.0 for Kobo hardware, which is actually very good news for the owners of such devices.

The application is now also capable of showing the name of the virtual library at the top when browsing books in a virtual library and it features a keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+*) to convert the current search into a temporary virtual library.

The developer added a transliterate function, useful to convert metadata in other languages into its phonetic English representation, when exporting books from Calibre.

Also, the button used to toggle the search result highlighting from “next” to the “search bar” has been removed. Apparently, users were clicking it by mistake. If you want to enable the button, it can be restored via Preferences –> Searching.

The Linux platform has received a specific feature. An option has been added and it can be used to cause Calibre to detach from its controlling terminal (--detach). This is very useful if you started the application from a terminal and you want to close that terminal without closing Calibre.

A lot more information can be found in the complete announcement and you can also check out our review of Calibre.

Keep in mind that, if you want to compile the software yourself, you will need GLIBC 2.10 or higher, and xdg-utils and python ≥ 2.6 installed (3.x will not work). More details about the required dependencies can be found on the official website.
