Calibre is one of the best eBook management software available right now but its strength lies in the abundance of plug-ins available for it.

This week we’ll take a look at a very interesting plug-in called “MobiUnpack - The Plugin”. According to the developer, it is used to unpack/inspect the contents of DRM-free MOBI files.

More precisely, MobiUnpack unpacks the contents of DRM-free MOBI files into their source components, while trying to maintain as much of the original metadata. Here are some highlights of the plug-in:

• Unpack the source components of DRM-free MOBI files to an external directory which can be chosen by the user; • Split Kindlegen 2 produced files into separate, stand-alone MOBI and KF8 ebooks; • Convert DRM-free KF8 ebooks to ePubs and add them to the Calibre library; • Extract PDFs from DRM-free Print Replica ebooks (AZW4) and add them to the Calibre library.

The plug-in can be easily installed from the preferences menu of the Calibre or from the official forums, and it needs version 0.8.18 or higher of Calibre.
