A number of other improvements have been made

Calibre, an application used primarily for reading and converting eBooks, has been updated and now comes with much better Unity integration, along with a number of new features.

A new version of the Calibre application has been released and the developer has made a number of very interesting changes, which are a little bit different from what we were used to. Most of the updates to Calibre usually deal with fixes or features that have to do with some of the functions, but now we have something that is directly related to the integration in a particular Linux distribution.

In fact, this version of the application deals with a lot more than just these simple changes for the Unity desktop environment. A number of other Linux-only modifications have been made, so this is a very good reason to upgrade as soon as possible.

Calibre 2.8 will make Ubuntu users happy

Ubuntu developers integrated in the 14.04 LTS release the possibility to have the menus for an application in the top bar of the window, which saved a lot of space and allowed users to have much better productivity on very big screens. You might have noticed that Calibre didn't use this feature, at least not until now. The developer has finally enabled this option and all of the functions of the app can now be found in the top bar.

"Add support for the global menubar in Ubuntu Unity (The menu that is displayed in the top most on screen bar). It now works both with the main calibre program and the e-book editor. You can customize what appears in the menubar via Preferences->Toolbars," says the developer in the official changelog.

Another surprising improvement that comes with this update, for Linux users at least, is the fact that the tray icon is working once more. It was disabled a while back, but it seems that it was sorely missed and now it's available again.

"Re-enable the system tray icon on linux. System tray icons now work in any desktop environment that supports the StatusNotifier spec, such as Ubuntu Unity, KDE 4+, GNOME 3, etc," also write the dev in the announcement.

Other notable changes in this latest version include the support for Tolino Vision 2, a new book store called Bubok (from Spain), a new option to prevent tapping on the page, some updated news source, and a few more fixes.
