The Calibre application, a complete solution to edit, view, and convert eBook files, has received another update that brings quite a lot of fixes and a few small improvements.

Calibre might seem complete at first glance, but it's very complex and the developer has to constantly bring fixes and other changes to it. There are no major new features added in this release, but regular users will benefit from the update nonetheless.

The developer has also chosen to increase the version number with new releases, thus advancing the application a lot more. The fact that numerous modifications are made almost on a weekly basis is now correctly reflected in the program’s version.

Calibre 2.5.0 is mostly about fixes

One of the Calibre features that are updated the least is the Viewer. This is a tool used to view the eBooks loaded in the Library and it's been in its current form for a long time. It's a very good tool, it's stable, and it does its job extremely well. It didn't need too many fixes, but now the developer has decided to improve it.

"Allow changing the website that is used as a dictionary for looking up words in the viewer. Click the Preferences button in the viewer and choose the dictionaries tab to customize the website," notes the dev in the changelog. Also, editing books is now better because the application will now handle the :first-letter and :first-line pseudo-element style rules before embedding the fonts to the book.

The developer explains that the Trekstor Pyrus 2 LED driver has been added to the application, the new Kobo Aura H2O reader is now detected by Calibre, the spell check function has received a number of improvements, some Qt fixes have been implemented for the interface, the covers for EPUB files are now working as they should, and lots of other smaller bugs have been corrected.

How to install it

One the things that's really missing from Calibre is an automatic update procedure. Unfortunately, updating the application has to be done by installing each new version manually. The good news is that the dev has a single command to enter in a terminal, which makes things a lot easier.

The source package is also available, if you want it, and you can download it from Softpedia. We also put together a brand new review of Calibre and we hope that you will be able to appreciate this application even more after you've read it.
