Calculate Linux, an optimized distribution designed for rapid deployment in corporate environments that's based on the Gentoo project and includes numerous pre-configured functions, is now at version 14.

The Calculate Linux distribution is comprised of several flavors and all of them are aimed at very specific users. The high number of different editions shows just how dedicated the developers are, no matter the target of the operating system.

"Calculate Linux Desktop is a complementary solution for the Server and together they provide important features like roaming profiles and centralized software deployment. Calculate Directory Server can successfully replace a Windows NT domain controller (Windows clients supported) and provides additional services that can be deployed in a matter of minutes: LDAP, Mail, Jabber and many others."

"Calculate Linux is based on Gentoo that is well known for its stability and great performance on a broad range of hardware: from Pentium Pro to modern CPUs," reads the official website.

In fact, this is one of the very few Linux distros based on Gentoo, which isn't the easiest system to use, not to mention to base an entire fleet of operating systems on it. Gentoo is also a system known to be very stable and extremely customizable, features that have certainly trickled into Calculate.

Users can choose between Calculate Linux Desktop featuring either KDE (CLD), GNOME (CLDG), or Xfce (CLDX), Calculate Directory Server (CDS) for server solutions, Calculate Media Center (CMC) should you need any, and scratch versions for those preferring minimal installations: Calculate Linux Scratch (CLS) and Calculate Scratch Server (CSS).

According to the changelog, a user-friendly tool that features automatic update checkup and notifications that are shown in the system tray and in the command line has been added, the GUI and CLI interfaces for the cl-update utility have been updated, the remote updating feature has been improved, a somewhat comprehensive localization for the package manager, including the packages descriptions (only English and Russian now, French coming soon) has been implemented, and a cache for the calculated dependencies has been added.

Also, the full update cycle, beginning with the repos syncing, has been implemented, two system overlays are now used, the basic one (Calculate) and the distribution specific one (Distros), a profile that can be inherited from several overlays at build time has been added, a better graphical interface for Calculate Utilities is now available, and the Plymouth decorations are now running on the login screen.
