According to the conclusions of a new study, it would appear that the way a person responds when consuming a stimulant can be used as an indicator to their chances of becoming addicted to heavier drugs in the future.

The new investigation was carried out on people who took pleasure in caffeine. Details of the investigation were published in the November issue of the medical journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence, PsychCentral reports.

“Future research will be important to examine whether caffeine reinforcement predicts vulnerability to reinforcement and abuse of classic psychomotor stimulants such as amphetamine and cocaine,” University of Vermont expert and study leader Stacey Sigmon, PhD, says.

However, the research team is keen to point out that these data offer only indicators, and are therefore not meant to be interpreted that every coffee lover out there is to be considered a prospective drug addict.
