Improved OS and WiMAX connectivity

Successor of the popular Nokia N810 and Nokia 8000 Internet Tablets, the new Nokia N810 WiMAX was officially presented by the Finnish company in the first day of CTIA Wireless 2008 (1 - 3 April, Las Vegas). Not a breaking news here, as almost everyone knew this was going to happen, but it's still an official release that needs to be welcomed.

Planned to be launched only in the US, Nokia N810 WiMAX brings about the same specs as the original N810. One of its novelties consists in the fact that, as the name shows, it offers WiMAX connectivity (where this is available), allowing users to enjoy full and speedy Web access, beyond Wi-Fi hot spots. Sprint, for example, intends to deploy a WiMAX network to cover most of the US (until the end of 2008), so there you have a carrier that you can use the new N810 with.

Another change that Nokia N810 WiMAX comes with is the upgraded Operating System that now includes automatically-made updates, improved email client and Chinese characters support (for Web and RSS feeds). The enhanced OS will also be available, at no charge, for N810 and N800 owners.

Except WiMAX connectivity, Nokia N810 WiMAX also packs a full-featured Mozilla-based Internet browser, a wide 4.13 inch touchscreen, full QWERTY sliding keyboard, GPS (for easy navigation and on-screen maps), Bluetooth, media player and 2GB of built-in memory that can be extended to 10GB.

"By delivering the kind of open Internet experience that consumers previously only expected on a desktop PC, the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition is a compelling example of how next generation broadband wireless technology will not only change the way people think about the Internet, it will change the very nature of the Internet itself," declared Ari Virtanen, Vice President of Convergence Products for Nokia. "Much in the way that the evolution of the fixed Internet from dial-up to broadband enabled a host of new Internet services and changed people's expectations of what an Internet experience should be, the transition to a broadband Internet experience set free from the constraints of a fixed network will spark the next wave of new mobile Internet services, and will forever change the perception of what the Internet can be."

Nokia didn't announce the retail price for Nokia N810 WiMAX yet. The device will apparently hit the market starting the second half of this year, and since the original N810 is now priced at $479.99 (on Nokia's website), the WiMAX edition will probably be with about $100 more expensive.
