The information about the Linux port for the engine can be seen in the Steam database

CRYENGINE, a game engine developed by Crytek, was announced for Linux a short while ago and it looks like the activity in the Steam database is picking up, but the future of this great technology hangs in the balance.

When Crytek announced that it planned to integrate Linux support into CRYENGINE, the entire community rejoiced at the news. To have such a powerful engine (along with Unreal) offer Linux support for the developers and for the potential customers was actually very good PR for the platform.

The problem now is that Crytek seems to be going through a rough patch financially, which in turn could affect the Linux support promised by the company. The last few months have been very problematic, with missing payrolls, key people leaving the company, and other similar issues.

Crytek has yet to acknowledge any kind of financial woes, despite the wave of issues that have been reported in the last few weeks. There is a bit of good news though. It looks like Crytek is still working on the Linux support, or least this is what it seems if we take a closer look at the Steam database.

CRYENGINE has had an entry in the Steam database for some time now, but the developers have made some modifications to the files and that means that Linux support may be coming along just fine. In fact, the Linux launch of CRYENGINE might prove to be a lifeline for the company, if the money problems are confirmed.

“CRYENGINE is the first all-in-one development solution with truly scalable computation and benchmark graphics technologies. With CRYENGINE, developers are fully equipped to create standout game experiences, using the engine behind games like Ryse: Son of Rome and Crysis series.”

“The Famous CRYENGINE Sandbox editor is a production proven, third-generation real-time tool suite designed and built by AAA Developers. All development features of a CRYENGINE game can be produced, edited and played immediately with the ‘what you see is what you play’ (WYSIWYP) system,” reads the Steam entry.

The information about the Linux version is taken from the Steam database, and by no means is it completely certain. The Steam Database is a record of data that describes every Steam game and subscription provided by Valve for the Steam service.

Usually, the new entries are first visible in the Steam Database before their official launch, but there is no indication about a release date.

We'll keep you apprised with more information about the Linux version of CRYENGINE as it becomes available.
