This is the biggest update for CRYENGINE in a long time

Crytek has just patched CRYENGINE, and the famous engine finally supports the Linux platform. The changes have been made for the CRYENGINE Steam subscribers, but it's likely that they will land for other users as well.

Crytek announced its intention of supporting the Linux platform more than a year ago, and we've had some promises since then, but it's finally happening. The company gave us a little scare last year, when they faced some financial problems, but it seems that they secured an investor and the work for the Linux support continued.

We were expecting a big release, but the developers managed to get the Linux support with just an update, although they do say that it's the biggest update they've made since they adopted the Engine-as-a-Service model back in May 2014. In any case, there is much more to this update than just the Linux support that just landed.

Crytek 3.8.1 is a massive update

The company has finally added Linux to the list of supported OSes, although developers will still need to use Windows. This will probably get rectified in the future, but for now we'll have to settle with this. It's still a huge step forward.

"Starting with 3.8.1, we are shipping a fully-featured OpenGL rendering implementation with CRYENGINE, which goes hand in hand with Linux support for your games. As previously announced, we are adding Linux support for your Game.exe. While you will still need Windows to use the Sandbox Editor, you can now release your commercial games on Linux as well as on PC- and, of course, there are still no royalties whatsoever!" reads the announcement made by Crytek.

CRYENGINE has received some other new features, like 8-weight GPU vertex skinning, Voxel-based volumetric fog, POM self-shadowing, and support for 3ds Max 2016, Maya 2016 and MotionBuilder 2016. More details about his huge release can be found in the comprehensive documentation put together by Crytek.
