Audi already uses them to order cars around

Yesterday, we noted that the Audi representative at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2015) had used an LG Smartwatch to call a self-driving car over to the stage where their demonstration was taking place.

Already much speculation surrounds the wearable device, and one thing we know for certain is that it uses a version of the WebOS operating system. A WebOS with support for third-party apps.

It'll be interesting to see how the Android wear operating system changes to match this upstart challenger.

Hardware-wise, the LG device showed the ability to unlock NFC-powered cars and to flick through menu settings, even cellphone-like options.

That suggests that the unnamed LG watch can work independently from a smartphone, receiving and sending messages and maybe even placing calls.

All the while, all the functions are packed inside a frame made of sapphire crystal and stainless steel.

The Wall Street Journal has since reportedly uncovered the estimated time of arrival of the still unnamed and unpriced wearable electronic device: 2016.

That's right, even though Audi reps are already using it, the LG smartwatch won't make it to market before early 2016. That leaves the possibility of its hardware evolving beyond what it is now (probably something involving the Intel Curie button-sized module).
