The camera had the image sensor and processing engine integrated into the lens unit

Ricoh is a Japanese camera and optics manufacturer that is also the owner of the Pentax brand. The company announced the GXR model back in 2009 featuring a one-of-a-kind design in comparison with the other interchangeable lens cameras announced in the same year.

The oddity was that the GXR body didn't come with a built-in sensor and image processor as most cameras do, instead the firm decided to integrate them into the lens unit, which uses a slide-in mount to attach to the camera body.

At the time of launch, GXR users had only two lens modules available, their number being raised to five within the last years.

In an interview for AmateurPhotographer at CES, Jonah Martin, Ricoh Imaging UK managing director, declared that the GXR was no longer available for purchase in the United Kingdom and, as far as he knew, Ricoh had already stopped manufacturing that model.

Although the company has yet to officially announce that the GXR model will no longer be produced, the last remaining stocks are available in Germany.
