The new display quality will probably have better success than 3D

The Consumer Electronics Show, 2014 Edition, has not yet started, but it's just a day away, which means that announcements are already rolling out. What we have here is a prediction in regard to the show as a whole though, not a company or specific product.

And by that we mean that Shawn DuBravac, chief economist for the Consumer Electronics Association, spoke during a pre-CES briefing about what we can expect.

The highlight was this: there could be as many as 150 new UHD television sets out and about by the time the three-day trade conference ends.

That's right, 150 new TVs with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels will be introduced from January 7 to January 10, 2014, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

DuBravac didn't actually make such an optimistic prediction. His own words were that he "wouldn't be surprised to see 75 UHDTV announcements."

Nevertheless, there are many types of announcements, like product introductions (in this case curved and flat displays), distribution deals and hardware rollouts.

Put together, they lead to a far higher figure than the one given by the chief economist.

UHD TVs will be for this year's Consumer Electronics Show what curved displays were for IFA 2013 and 3D was for CES 2013.

Which is to say, they will steal most of the show, especially with LG and Samsung constantly trying to one-up each other.

In the past, there were even scandals about one or the other stealing the rival's technology, or even hijacking a shipment. Nothing was proven, and a patent war is still going on between the two, but that's how it is.

According to analysts, up to 500,000 UHD TVs will be sold in 2014, a humongous figure compared to the 60,000 of 2013. By 2013, CEA says, the figure could reach 3 million.

The marketing success of UHD is expected to be better than for 3D, and even that technology saw a 100% sales improvement last year, so things are riding a pretty high note right now.
