You don't need the extra monitor hardware if you have the variable refresh rate technology

Yesterday, I reported that NVIDIA was using the 2014 edition of the Consumer Electronics Show as a launching pad for the G-Sync Lag-Slaying Technology.

I also implied that Advanced Micro Devices would provide a counteroffer soon, and here it is.

Some may be surprised to learn, however, that the Sunnyvale CPU, GPU and APU maker doesn't have its own hardware to offer.

Instead, it has outlined its variable refresh rate technology, nicknamed FreeSync, which does the same thing without the extra monitor part (and, thus, for free).

All it needs is for the GPU engine to support it, as well as the display hardware itself.

Apparently, it all started with an already existing VESA standard for controlling VBLANK intervals.
