Sony unveiled earlier yesterday at the International Consumer Electronics Show two new Android-based smartphones, the AT&T-bound Xperia ion and the Xperia S. The former is slated for a Q2 2012 release, while the latter should be available in the following weeks

Today, the Japanese handset maker announced two new devices that will be exclusively available on the Japanese market, the Xperia acro HD and Xperia NX.

Although the first two smartphones revealed at CES 2012 wear only Sony’s branding, it appears that the Japanese devices are still branded with the old Sony Ericsson logo.

Both smartphones are expected to arrive in the coming weeks at NTT Docomo, but there are no details on the pricing options.

While the Xperia acro HD is a completely new device, the Xperia NX seems to be the Japanese version of the recently announced Xperia S.

Sony Ericsson (still) Xperia NX sports a stunning 4.3-inch LCD “Reality Display” that boasts 720 x 1280 pixels resolution. On the back, the phone packs an impressive 12-megapixel Exmor R camera with LED flash, autofocus and full HD (1080p) video recording capabilities. A secondary 1.3-megapixel camera for self-portraits and high-quality video calls is available as well.

Xperia NX is powered by a 1.5 GHz dual core processor and packs 1GB of RAM, 1 to 1.5GB of internal memory and 32GB flash memory.

The Xperia acro HD is an improved version of the original Xperia acro and comes with a 4.3-inch HD display (720 x 1280 pixels resolution), a 12-megapixel camera and a 1.5 GHz dual core processor.

Both smartphones run Google’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform, but will probably receive an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade by year’s end.

It is also worth mentioning that Xperia acro HD and Xperia NX are delivered with Japanese-specific features, including Near Field Communications (NFC) mobile wallet, TV tuner and IrDA support.
