Slacker, the team behind the popular Slacker Radio application for Android smartphones, has just announced a new version of its freeware aimed at Android tablets, at the International Consumer Electronics Show.

Although the application has yet to be published in the Android Market, Slacker Radio for Android tablets was shown exclusively at the Verizon Wireless booth.

Specifically optimized for larger screens, the new Slacker Radio application comes with a feature-rich user interface, which is meant to get the most content from a fast 4G LTE connection.

The developer highlighted the application’s “unique station tile display with horizontal and vertical scrolling,” but also the ability to preview a station before you actually play it. Slacker Radio for Android tablets includes an optimized capability that allows users to browse for content, as well.

In addition, the developer also made it easier for users to switch between menus or navigate content and different available views. The application is also capable of displaying song lyrics, album reviews and artist profiles.

Slacker Radio is Pandora’s main competitor and is aimed at United States and Canada users who need a reliable Internet radio service. The application offers users more than 150 music stations, personalized ABC News and ESPN sports content, as well as comedy.

The development team behind the application claims that they offer access to a music catalog “that is over ten times larger than Pandora.”

Currently, Slacker Radio for Android smartphones is available as a free download in the Android Market, but the premium version requires a $3.99 monthly fee.

Our new application for the Android tablet combines the hands-off listening experience that Slacker is known for with hands-on, in-depth music discovery perfected for a high speed network.  Having the opportunity to show this application for the first time at the Verizon booth at CES is incredible, and we're honored to participate,” said Jonathan Sasse, senior vice president of marketing at Slacker.
