Playback the content stored on a CD or DVD through USB

After yesterday’s PlexEasy external DVD burner, Plextor announced yet another stand-alone optical disc writer, dubbed the PX-612U.

Like the PlexEasy, the drive can connect to an HDTV, or media streamer, directly through a USB port without requiring a PC, thus enabling users to play back the content stored on a CD or DVD.

The secret behind this feat is a certain something called PlexTV, which basically makes the PX-612U seem like an external HDD to the HDTV.

If this sounds a lot like what a Blu-ray or DVD player can do is because this is indeed the case, the only difference being that it connects through USB and not HDMI.

Plextor’s interesting contraption should become available in first quarter of this year, at a yet unknown price point.
