Sony is planning to deploy Music Unlimited on iOS devices in the form of a native application, Tim Schaaff, head of Sony Entertainment Network, has revealed during a small media event at CES 2012.

According to VentureBeat’s mobile division, the Japanese electronics company is planning to offer a free iPhone and iPad app at some point this quarter.

The confirmation reportedly came from the Sony’s Entertainment Network chief, Tim Schaaff, at a small gathering with the media at CES.

Sony’s Music Unlimited service now has over 1 million active subscribers, Schaaf says. Deploying an iOS app couldn’t come at a better time for the company as Sony also recently struck a record deal with indie music site CDBaby, amassing 15 million global tracks.

The Music Unlimited app will offer local storage for subscribers in the form of “offline caching”, allowing users to listen to their favorite tracks when they’re not connected to the Internet.
