After being available for Apple devices for more than half a year, Kingston has announced that the Wi-Drive wireless external SSD can now also be used with the popular 7-inch Kindle Fire tablet thanks to a new app downloadable for free from the Amazon Appstore.

Kingston's Wi-Drive enables users to share the content they have stored on the device wirelessly with up to three friends at the same time.

The drive is available in three versions, one packing 16GB, one 32GB and the most advanced of these 64GB of storage space, and can also be connected to the computer via a USB connection (Kingston includes such a cable in the retail package).

When constantly streaming multimedia content, the device's battery life will top out at approximately four hours, putting it in stand-by raising this value to about six hours.

"Since its debut, Kingston Wi-Drive has been a success with Apple mobile device users,” said Andrew Ewing, Flash memory business manager, Kingston.

“As more consumers adopt Kindle Fire as their mobile device for personal media consumption, we are proud to help this new segment of users store and share photos, videos, music and much more."

"The combination of the app update, higher capacity and Kindle Fire support makes Wi-Drive the perfect wireless storage solution for mobile users," concluded the company’s rep.

The 16GB and 32GB version of the Kingston Wi-Drive are available as we speak, for $129.99 and 174.99, (100 and 139 EUR) respectively, while the larger 64GB model will arrive “soon,” according to Kingston, at an yet undisclosed price point.

The additional storage space offered by the Kingston Wi-Drive SSD comes as a breath of fresh air for the Kindle Fire, since the tablet is available in a single version which offers just 8GB of storage space.
