The fact that mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless is set to bring to its network in the not too far future Sony Ericsson's new Xperia PLAY smartphone is not a mystery to anyone, though an official release date for the new device was not unveiled as of yet.

According to a recently leaked roadmap from Verizon, the phone should be released in a matter of weeks, and the fact that it has just received the necessary FCC approvals shows that it should be released quite soon.

Of course, nothing was officially confirmed on the matter until now, but it appears that April 14th might easily prove the lucky day for enthusiast, just as any other day would do.

According to the FCC filing, the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY smartphone would arrive at Verizon with support for CDMA 824MHz - 849MHz and 1850MHz – 1910MHz frequencies.

At the same time, the available FCC documents show that the handset would arrive with a SIM slot inside, which might suggest that it could sport both GSM/CDMA support, and that Verizon might launch it as a world phone.

Last week, Sony Ericsson announced the launch of Xperia PLAY in a number of 11 markets around the world, adding that it should become available in six more countries in about two weeks, but did not mention United States among them.

However, the company did say that the mobile phone is being launched with a number of no less than 60 games available specifically for it, and that more of them should become available in the not too far future.

The specifications list of the new device includes a 4-inch touchscreen display, complemented by a sliding gamepad, a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back, or a microSD memory card slot for additional storage space.

The handset runs under Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform, and sports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity options, along with GPS receiver, 3G support, and access to a wide range of applications and games via the Android Market.
