The Cyberpunk video game that CD Projekt is working on at the moment has forced the company to update the setting and include some more modern elements, mainly because the setting of the board game original was somewhat dated by its 1980 origins.

Adam Badowski, who is the managing director working at CD Projekt, has told GameFront that, “Cyberpunk is about the not-too-distant future, so we have to refresh the classic Cyberpunk setting.

“Our inspiration is more around the film Blade Runner. Cyberpunk is more about how technology empowers you to change the world on your own.”

Marcin Iwinski, the chief executive officer at the company, added, “We were talking to Mike and asking, ‘Okay, you’re the creator, it’s been 25 years or that, that’s your baby, so what is for you?’. And he’s saying that it’s the not-too-distant future, but foreseeing the trend from now to this not-too-distant future, and what will be there.”

The two executives say that the world the Cyberpunk video game will deliver is not a retro one because that would not appeal to a younger audience.

The team is more interested in using the core concepts of Cyberpunk to create a deep game experience, which offers interesting choices and can then show the player the consequences, than in simply replicating the board game.

CD Projekt believes that the marriage between graphics, action and role playing seen in The Witcher can be translated to a near future world and that the setting can attract a number of players who would never embrace fantasy and medieval themes.

Cyberpunk has been officially announced but CD Projekt is not yet ready to talk about hardware platforms or about a potential launch window.

The name is also subject to change before the game is out and for now CD Projekt is only ready to share art with the fan community.
