CCleaner continues to be one of the top cleaning solutions on the market, and thanks to an update released today, the application should work even smoother on the brand new Windows 8.1 operating system in the 64-bit version.

CCleaner 4.18 brings a feature that was previously available on the Professional version of the application in the free package, thus making it available for everyone downloading the app.

The so-called Active System Monitoring option is a module that runs in the background and automatically detects when cleaning is needed in order to keep enough space available.

Piriform has a few more details on this change:

“In this release, we've added one of our most requested features to the free version- Active System Monitoring. While not as powerful as the Professional version, CCleaner Free can now monitor your system in the background and detect when to Clean based on space that can be saved.”

Windows 8.1 improvements also available

Version 4.18 also comes with improved Firefox Saved Password cleaning, thus adding a new layer of privacy to your computer in case you’re afraid that someone else could access your passwords. In terms of browsers, the new release also integrates Opera History cleaning to remove traces from loaded websites.

But what’s more important is that the new CCleaner build promises to address most, if not all, of the annoyances experienced by users on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 64-bit, so in case you’re running one of these two platforms, make sure that you update the app as soon as possible.

Of course, other minor GUI improvements and bug fixes are also part of this new release, and so is support for new apps, such as Ashampoo Burning Studio 14, XnView, and FastStone Capture.

Same intuitive GUI and feature pack

As you can see in the photo gallery after the jump, CCleaner continues to rely on the very same familiar interface with an intuitive look and modules listed on the left side of the screen.

You can easily launch the cleaner and remove files generated by your browsers and installed applications to clean up space, or scan the registry for unnecessary items that might slow down your computer.

A number of other tools are also available to quickly uninstall application, manage startup items, find files, perform a system restore or wipe a certain drive to make sure that your files cannot be recovered.

Needless to say, a backup is recommended in case you accidentally remove some essential files, and the application offers support for all Windows versions on the market, including the old XP.
