The system uses existing GPRS or 3G mobile data networks

The mobile CCTV solution that is to be launched by Tyco Traffic & Transportation will deliver live video such as traffic flow or incident images onto the PDA, notebook or desktop PC of people who need this information while on the move.

The advantage to this service is that it uses the existing GPRS and 3G networks, so there will be no need for new and costly infra-structure. With an included encoder, usable video images are produced over very low bandwith data links, between 9.6 and 256 kbps. The video can be encoded via an existing CCTV system and transmitted to the remote devices or directly from remote cameras.

According to Tyco's Account Manager, Adrian Ford, "It is ideal for rapid deployment of CCTV or for extending CCTV monitoring beyond the limit of existing infrastructures enabling viewing of live video feeds directly from moving vehicles or vehicles parked at the scene of an incident. The system uses the latest mobile technology to allow staff to be fully mobile while still having instant access to live video."

Any handheld PDA, laptop or desktop PC connected to the Internet via an existing radio network or a hard-wired internet connection can be used. The latency of the video is very low, less than 1 second over the standard GPRS link while the user is provided with full pan, tilt and zoom control of remote cameras.

A large number of remote cameras can be connected to a single system, the only limitation being the available bandwith at the camera site or the server of the user. While it is especially useful for traffic and incident management, the system can be used to provide other types of users with great mobility while still being able to access video images.
