Superman’s cousin comes to the small screen this fall

Since superhero movies and spinoff shows continue to be all the rage, CBS is finally taking a chance on the Warner Bros. property “Supergirl,” having recently ordered a full season of the series. It will premiere in the fall and the network has just released a first trailer for it.

Well, it’s rather an introductory video: clocking in at over 6 minutes and a half, the footage aims to explain Supergirl’s story to those not familiar with it from the comics.

Supergirl, or Kara Zor-El, is actually Superman’s cousin. She too was sent away from her home planet at the last moment, right before it exploded, and she too landed on Earth. Just like Kal-El, Kara has been hiding her true identity from the world, fearing that people might not accept her knowing she was an alien being with powers infinitely beyond their own.

The series picks up at a moment when Kara (Melissa Benoist) is just settling in this new, “normal” life in the big city. She works as an assistant to media mogul Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart), but one extraordinary circumstance forces her to use the powers she always knew she had.

“Supergirl” also stars Chyler Leigh and Mehcad Brooks, and plays out, from what I can make out from this preview, as a cross between a televised “Devil Wears Prada” and “Superman.” Old-school Superman, not the dark, depressing and serious one from Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel.”

Check out the footage below and let me know in the comments: is this something you’d tune in for?
