Unveiled back in April, CASIO's G'zOne Commando rugged Android smartphone is now the subject of an 'extreme' campaign that intends to demonstrate its toughness.

Exclusively available through Verizon Wireless, the phone was built with military requirements in mind and can withstand severe conditions.

Dubbed as “Tougher is Smarter,” CASIO's campaign puts the phone to the test in six extreme scenarios to show customers the impressive durability of the G’zOne line of devices and the Commando in particular.

Although the phone is powered by Android 2.2 (Froyo), thanks to CASIO's advanced G’zGEAR software, the phone can be operated in eight modes: Earth Compass, Walking Counter, Adventure Training, Trip Memory, Tides, Thermometer, Sun/Moon Tracker and Star Gazer.

Basically, those who purchase the phone will be able to use it as a standard compass, walking counter, tidal graph display, thermometer that shows current temperature in both Celsius and Fahrenheit, personal trainer, outdoor activities recorder, sun and moon phases tracker, as well as a GPS for the stars and constellation.

In addition, the Commando is a mobile office with high security features, XT9 and T9 trace input for efficient typing and snap-out menu for customized access to high-use applications.

Furthermore, CASIO created the campaign to show customers that the device can be submerged in three feet of water for up to 30 minutes and withstand drops and extreme weather conditions.

It is also worth mentioning that G'zOne Commando meets military standards 810G for immersion, rain, shock and dust resistant, vibration, salt fog, humidity, solar radiation, altitude, low and high temperature storage.

The G'zOne Commando comes equipped with Wi-Fi, mobile hot-spot capability for up to five devices, GPS, as well as high-security features for corporate e-mail.

An additional element of the “Tougher is Smarter” campaign includes a sponsorship of the Los Angeles-based X Games 17 on ESPN July 28-31.

Ha. After my son dropping my Commando and the screen shattering the Verizon Customer Service Representative telling me "Ruggedized, mil-spec, go anywhere phone" really means "if its in your pocket and someone bumps you the phone shouldn't shatter", therefore the damage from dropping isn't covered. I'm in the military and thats NOT our definition of mil-spec.

I own this phone and i must say it is a brute! I absolutely love it. I work outside and in the extremes as far as weather is concerned and it has not fail yet. I recommend it to people who work or just plain live in the outdoors!
