Butler Schein Animal Health started sending “important security and protection notifications” to their customers after they discovered that the MyVetDirect.com servers were breached and customer credit card information may have been leaked.

“This incident may have resulted in the unauthorized acquisition of certain personal information about you in connection with one or more orders you placed through your veterinarian’s Website and which were filled by Butler Schein Animal Health,” reads a letter sent to their customers.

Names, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, credit card and billing information were stored in the affected databases.

The incident has been reported to the authorities as soon as it was discovered, but while the investigation continues, customers need to take appropriate measures to make sure their assets are secured.

“In addition, in order to protect your personal information from further unauthorized access and to minimize the chance of any future incidents, we have undertaken additional action, including implementing enhanced intrusion and exploit blocking, conducting a forensic audit and implementing other increased security measures,” the letter continues.

Fortunately, at the moment, there are no indications that any of the compromised information is being used for malicious purposes, but since that can change at any time, the individuals involved are advised to closely monitor their financial information for any suspicious transactions that may take place.

Also, Butler Schein is offering their customers a one-year free credit monitoring service, but those who want to benefit from it have to activate the service until March 31, 2012.

Hopefully, the measures the company implemented are efficient in stopping future attacks. These days, with so many websites, it’s almost impossible not to fall victim to a hacking operation, but the least these organizations can do is to learn from their mistakes to make sure that from this point on their customers will be better protected.

The odd thing about the letter I recieved is the second page. It's basically a complimentary 12-month Triple Alert membership with Experian's ProtectMyID Elite product. It feels like a 'partnership' between Butler and Experian to push their product. And I'm sure if I sign up, next year I'll be getting all kinds of renewal fees to keep the product. And the 3rd and 4th pages are the 'scare' tactic in the event I don't want the Experian product, here is 2 long detailed pages I'll need to do to prevent fraud. I also have not saved my credit card on their site, so why are they storing my credit card info? Something feels/sounds/tastes very fishy....
