This video of a driver punching a young woman sparked a lot of controversy, with many saying the state employee had no right to physically assault a passenger.

25-year-old Shi'dea Lane from Cleveland is the girl injured in the video, Fox8 reported after tracking down the girl. She identified the man as 59-year-old Artis Hughes, of East Cleveland.

In the clip, it looks like the driver was confronted for prior actions and, as the discussion got heated, he proceeded to not only uppercut her, but also grab her hair. The girl was tossed on the floor, possibly plummeting under the force of the well-built man's punch.

Lane came forward and explained the driver was asking her to pay for a ticket, and she was looking for the money in her purse. The man started insulting her, claiming she was lying and had no intention of paying.

The incident happened on September 18. Hughes asked the girl to get off at the next stop, but the girl insisted she would find the money to pay for the ticket.

“He said ‘I’ll drop you off here,’ [I] didn’t want to get off and he said ‘I’ll drop you off at the first stop I get to,” she described.

She had previously spat on him, after she had received rude comments about her appearance, in which the driver described her as having her face sliced up.

As he pulls her off the floor, forcibly grabs her arm and brutally tosses her off the bus, he explains his actions to the rest of the passengers, terrified by the scene.

"She wants to be a man, I'm gonna treat you like a man," he says.

Many users are demanding for the man to be arrested and prosecuted for his actions, as well as fired before his loose temper could lead him to hurt passengers worse, if they were to cross him.

The RTA police report has Hughes on record fighting back, and relaying his version of the event:

“She said she would spit on me, that’s when I told her I would hurt her, she continued to threaten me and as I was driving, she grabbed me in the throat and spit on me in the face.  I stopped the bus and I protected myself and got off the bus,” he says.

Artis Hughes is currently on unpaid suspension, until the investigation into this matter is concluded.

they say the state employee had no right to physically assault a passenger. No where upon being hired does it say, not to defend yourself especially 22 years ago. I know women can overstep their boundaries sometimes, all I can say is * .

Comment #1.3 by: Bob on 15 Oct 2012, 17:58 GMT

If she'd stayed in the kitchen where she belonged, then none of this would have happened. O_o

Comment #1.4 by: mira on 16 Oct 2012, 04:49 GMT

SHE DESERVED IT!!! She called her self wanting to be big and bad so he gave her a big and bad * whooping. No one should have the right to put their hand on anyone. Male or female if you put your hands on me im going to lay my hands on you. Not only did she hit him SHE SPIT ON HIM! THATS SOME NASTYYYYY * ! You cant talk a BIG TALK and not back it up. She challenged him and she lost #simple. That man dont deserve to get fired i wish i was his grand child so I could handle her one time.

Comment #1.5 by: SparksFL on 16 Oct 2012, 06:06 GMT

Any male that would hit a woman like that, has done it before. It is apparently he has no self control and should never work with public work. Disguising and totally Unacceptable! There was so many other ways he could have handle this situation.

Comment #1.6 by: curious on 18 Oct 2012, 17:04 GMT

Hey Fairfax,
I'm pretty sure his wife doesn't grab him by the throat and spit on him.

She deserve what she got and need to enroll in school..."hurted" she sounds as stupid as she looked on that video. If you are getting on the bus you know you should have your money ready why are you waiting until you get on the bus to "look for your money"

You are absolutely right!!

Comment #2.2 by: Smart thoughts on 15 Oct 2012, 15:23 GMT

All of you are saying she deserved it...so if this was your mother or sister...you would say the same thing??? You would say your mother or sister deserved to get hit like a man?? I THINK NOT!!! As a bus driver you are suppose to radio/call in these type of incidents, NOT TAKE MATTERS IN YOUR OWN HANDS!! Now...22 years with the bus company gone!!

Comment #2.3 by: kayyybayyy88 on 15 Oct 2012, 18:59 GMT

I agree 100% and I'm a woman she shouldn't have did all that it was so unnessary she got what she deserve

Comment #2.4 by: Don on 17 Oct 2012, 02:26 GMT

Your not seriously thinking that this is his fault.
If a woman can give a punch she can take a punch an eye for a eye.
Where is their a law that says women have to be bowed to, if I'm not mistaken women have fought for the right to be equals. Don't disrespect and not expect to be disrespected.
I'm actually mad at people talking abou he will loose his job, he shouldn't!

Comment #2.5 by: curious on 18 Oct 2012, 17:03 GMT

Lmao. You are correct. She sounded extremely ignorant. She also instigated it. She didn't deny it on the interview. She also didn't intend to pay.

Comment #4.2 by: DanyellWar on 16 Oct 2012, 03:09 GMT

Yeah she did antagonize him but to hit her like that.....I don't care if she was coming at him like a man. She isn't a man and he shouldn't have hit her that hard he could have pushed her or smacked her for spitting on him and then he should have threw her * off the bus. A upper cut like that was way to much. Yes i think he should lose his job after 22yrs for making such a bad decision. If that was me (which i wouldn't act like that) but the news clip would've been totally different. I would come back and get him because he drives that route everyday. He would have to pay for that one. I'm not saying she wasn't wrong I place the blame of getting hit period on her but he took it way to far. Really.

Comment #5 by: dj on 13 Oct 2012, 15:41 UTC reply to this comment

I don,t condone to a man beating on any woman, but women should not hit a man just because they can get away with it well in this case she did not. He is the 1 who is going to loose at all cost because she wants 2b disrespectful & put her hands on him.If he gets in trouble so should she most important she had every persons life at risk by distracting the driver. Bet she do not do it again.

Comment #5.1 by: Leevar on 14 Oct 2012, 08:32 GMT

That has been my arguement the whole time. She was a threat to everyone on the bus. If he hadn't reacted in some way, she was going to keep trying him.

Comment #5.2 by: Dell on 16 Oct 2012, 17:06 GMT

I don't hit females period. She can hit me curse me out
But I probably would've slapped the fire out her back
Side for spitting on me! The driver was wrong he should have radioed
To the police an have them get her off the bus
There's procedures to follow with disruptive passengers
I Feel sorry for his wife pretty sure he has done that to her !!!

Comment #6 by: niceshot on 13 Oct 2012, 16:04 UTC reply to this comment

She got what she deserved. She was confused that a man would hit her. You moron you grabbed the man by the throat and spit in his face. You acted all bad and tough and got spanked. You got what you deserved! If she sues the city and gets a dime this will be a disgrace.

Comment #7 by: Tamikiasmile on 13 Oct 2012, 16:05 UTC reply to this comment

The bus driver was obviously the victim here!!! Yes, the attacker happened to be a female; however, she was clearly the assailant. The bus driver was protecting himself and potentiatilly other passengers. Her attacking him while he was driving could have easily put everyone within sight of the bus in danger. It's sad that this man had to lose his job over this mess! A 59 year old man who has put in his "time", close to retirement age, has been victimized!!! She threw the first * ; therefore, she showed signs of being prepared for what was to come. I am not an advocate for a man hitting a woman nor am I one for a woman hitting a man. Right is right and the female was CLEARLY in the wrong.

Comment #8 by: Bossylady on 13 Oct 2012, 17:53 UTC reply to this comment

He was protecting himself she got it and I don't blame him foe that only because she stood by him talking disrespectful and you can see that h
She did touch him first ,city workers should not deal with people likes this so many of them end up getting hurt or killed. I hope he get his job back

I don't agree with a man beating a woman regularly but she walked over to him and that what took the confrontation to a new level. I'm sorry but if you hit someone first, then it's not unreasonable to be struck back with whatever force they can deliver.

Listen to her response when asked about her actions. She can't answer her part in it and can't even look at the lady with a straight face. Lying ghetto-ratchet * woman. Clean uppercut. Hope she doesn't get a dime. Sorry for the bus driver to have to go through that.

SHE'S A LIAR, AND GOT WHAT SHE DESERVED! She new she was getting on the bus. She should have had her money ready?? A bus driver gets paid if he drives 100ppl or if he drives one person. All a buss driver has to do is drive a bus safely and try to stay on time. I hope that poor man don't lose his job over her GHETTO NONSENSE!

Comment #13.1 by: rain on 24 Oct 2012, 02:04 GMT

You can even hear her friends comment as if to say there she goes starting * again. How is she going to grab his face and spit on him. She got what she deserved a royal * whipping. Somebody is going to kill that crazy woman. Dummy kept coming back for more. I don't feel sorry for her at all. I hate that he is going to lose his job.

This article doesn't mention how she had been yelling and verbally abusing him for like 10 prior to the fight. She started it, she should take whatever comes at her. Don't hit a male unless you're unwilling to take a hit back.

Comment #16 by: kia on 13 Oct 2012, 22:58 UTC reply to this comment

The girl was totally rude lets get that straight! She should have acted like a women, you can tell that she is ghetto and has no home training. I think some needs to go to her mom / dad house and give them a beaten for never teaching their child manners! They must have slep through her whole child hood. This girl had no business putting her hands on that man,he should have took his belt off and gave her a beaten that her parents never gave her. However at some point the bus driver had a choice to call the police, in this situation this he had to defend himself. Although, bus driver in Newyork,D.C. and Maryland could use customer service, interpersonal relationship, patients and appreciation for their job. Most of them are rude, angry, ghetto, given to many chances after disrespecting customers! Jobs are to hard to come by for these individuals to act as if they are not grateful for the job! This young lady cross the line though!

He instigated the issue. Then he gives her an uppercut, drags her & pulls her hair after she reacts. I'm nearly certain this isn't the first woman he's punched. He needs to be arrested & the City needs to make sure they hire workers who can more appropriately engage with the public. I'm outraged!

Comment #17.1 by: NY bus driver on 14 Oct 2012, 11:11 GMT

If you don't drive a bus and work with the public you wouldn't understand. Would you put your hands on a man? I think she derserved every bit of that punch

Comment #17.2 by: KStud on 14 Oct 2012, 12:06 GMT

You need to watch the entire video, not just the one where she gets hit and did you understand the bus was moving when she hit and spit on the driver?

ok she spat on him then hit him FIRST yeah she deserved that uppercut, anybody else would have choked the * out of her...have you EVER been spit on. nah i didnt think so, its the lowest form of degrading and humiliating someone plus its considered assault...

Comment #17.6 by: Danyellwar on 16 Oct 2012, 03:22 GMT

I agree with you and in my ex use to drive the city bus....He should have pulled over called his supervisor or the police. I'm not saying she didn't deserve to be hit because when you spit on someone that is a automatic reaction to defend yourself he just did way to much. Yes she is a ghetto hot mess, but he didn't have to hit her that * . Hard I'm mad just from looking at it. I hope she went got the men in her circle to kick his * .

Comment #17.7 by: dominique0033 on 16 Oct 2012, 03:27 GMT

If this woman gets a Lawsuit it will be a shame! She antagonized that man and put her hands on him first. From working for the company for 22 years he probably had enough of peoples disrespect and lost it. She may be a victim BUT he is also a victim. This woman is not innocent by far! I'm not condoning a man hitting a woman but she stepped to him like a man and brought it upon herself. Talk is cheap and so is riding the bus LOL

Comment #18 by: SF MUNIMAN on 14 Oct 2012, 00:36 UTC reply to this comment

As a former transit operator now supervisor and looking at the whole video the operator and the passenger are both wrong, but the passenger left the operator with no choice but to defend himself. The fact that she assulted him while operating the coach, thank god he did'nt have a colliision. What you people have to understand is just becauce we work for the City/County/State or Goverment do not think for one min that we are mandated to take the publics abuse. One has every right to protect him or her self. The operator went to far as uppercuting the young lady "YES" but the young lady got what she deserved. Im just saying dont try to write a check your mouth can't cash... MUNIMAN

Comment #18.1 by: Ced on 14 Oct 2012, 16:54 GMT

You are an idiot and should be removed from a supervisor position, if this is the case. Regardless of touching him, whatsoever, his life was in no way in any form of danger, that is clear from the video. He approached her. As a supervisor, you should instruct your people that the only time they are to be aggressive is if someone is still on them. I am a Supervisor, and I understand how the public acts, but not to the point, I am going to continue to fight, he got busted on video, and had no idea he was being recorded, if you go back and read his police report, he acted as if she was on top of him, and he was simply protecting himself, not walking up as if he is Mike Tyson. Idiot should have just called 911 or dispatch. What if it was your mother? Internet Thug with a loud mouth!

Comment #18.2 by: real on 14 Oct 2012, 18:42 GMT

^ the above comment is complete ignorance. you must be a female supervisor to act so high and mighty. the truth is he was operating the bus and she could have caused a collision to injure all of those people. you should be removed from your position as authority of anything because all you see is black and white. let a woman put hands on me while im driving and ill react the same. she definitely would of continued to antagonize the man and/or assault him due to her sub-human like nature. ghetto people arent humans just monkeys with no common sense. no one should lose their job over defending themselves, truth is the rta is only afraid of getting sued and any company would count self defense as a liability purely for that reason. its a sad world we live in where we cant defend ourselves anymore because of ignorant people like you. i hope to god someone knocks you the hell out for acting so high and mighty.

Comment #18.3 by: Jackman on 14 Oct 2012, 23:05 GMT

He was absolutely right to defend against her. Not because his life was in danger, but the passengers in the bus were in danger. She was attacking him while he was DRIVING! What happens when a passenger tries to rush a cockpit of an airplane?

If she is willing to assault him and risk other lives on the bus including his, then you must defend yourself. She deserved every bit of that mega uppercut. He should be rewarded!

Catch the whole video before you decide who's really at fault. The whole video is on worldstarhiphop.com. It clearly shows shi'dea lane being the aggressor and ignitiating the whole altercation. I like how she conveniently didn't want to answer her involvement in the whole situation. The guy is innocent as do his 22 yrs of service shows.

Ced I hope so bad that some ghetto Hoodrat female publicly embarrasses your * verbally. Then go to grab you and spit in your face. All the while the whole incident gets recorded and played on the internet. I can't wait to see your new version of the uppercut.

Comment #19 by: D. Devlin on 14 Oct 2012, 00:51 UTC reply to this comment

The way I see it, she was the initial aggressor, physically assaulting him first. I don't condone hitting a female, but she initiated and escalated the incident by spitting on him. He's guilty of losing his cool instead of alerting the proper authorities. He shouldn't be fired, but he should be required to take some form of anger management sessions before returning to the field.

Comment #19.1 by: Nellie on 15 Oct 2012, 03:34 GMT

What video are you watching?? She is 100% in the wrong. He is sitting in his seat driving the bus. This man is at work. She is in his face, talking trash, disrespecting him and assaults him first. Chivalry is dead. If women want to be respected and treated like women, then they need to act like it. Women like to play the "I'm a woman card when it suits them... You need to act and conduct yourself like a lady at all times.. Not like a foul mouth gutter rat. He was clearly within his right to defend himself and his passengers.

Comment #23 by: I's Married Now on 14 Oct 2012, 04:08 UTC reply to this comment

She was wrong. In the longer video the driver repeatedly tells her to step behind the yellow line, to get off the bus, to sit down and stop talking to him. She continues to disrespect him, tell him she's going to spit in his face and malign him. He tells her he will hurt her if she does. She spits on him, or hit him it's unclear, and he hits her. Being a woman should not, and does not exempt a person from the rules of engagement. She started it, he finished it. If she didn't want him to put his hands on her, she shouldn't have put hers on him. Just sayin' from one woman to another.

Comment #23.3 by: Shayshay on 14 Oct 2012, 22:24 GMT

It's funny because If the bus driver was a female who threw an uppercut to another people would have nothing to say, but because the driver is a male suddenly it's wrong to hit a women even if she hit him first. Regardless of gender you don't put your hands on someone and suddenly don't expect for the victim to defend themselves. This is 2012 women wanna be equal to men then they aren't allowed to play victim when they are in fact the perpetrator. Now abusing someone for control is another story. Don't confuse the two.

Comment #24 by: nana36 on 14 Oct 2012, 05:42 UTC reply to this comment

This clip did not show the entire incident when she was calling him a little * and the n word. It did not show her going up to the driver and striking him first. That's why he said she was going to jail. She instigated and provoked and struck first. She is not an innocent victim. She was thrown off the bus and jumped right back on to fight with the driver some more. He shouldn't have striked her that hard, but she had it coming. In the interview she looked all innocent, but if you show the entire clip you will see an totally different scenario. You guys really know how to manipulate info

This world is fallen to * its so much confusion with the youth that * like this happens an because of the internet she can walk away with a financial cum up..so sad....she is not the victim nor should she walk away as famous or with money...prosecute her ghetto * little *

That's just like the media to post a smiling picture of the girl and only show the part where she gets hit in the video, this frail young woman was acting and talking like a 300lb man.
In this day of equal rights, if she can put her hands on a man, then be prepared for the consequences.

I can't help but laugh at this whole thing. There's so many wrongs, it's hard to keep up.

1. This "reporting" is horrible to say the least and you can see the bias. Instead of getting both outlooks, they report on the so called victim and edit the clip to further suit their cause. Smh

2. How is it that not a single individual on that bus thought to separate the two before it escalated to physical contact? Instead, assisted in the detonation of emotions.

3. Where's the home training? Act like you have some sense. I didn't know "ladies" spat on people. If you act with no class, you deserve to be put on your * .

4. An uppercut?!?! He could've disarmed her in a different fashion. A choke out, armbar, or even a Spartan kick would've been a better option than a videogame uppercut! (She's got a solid chin!)

In the end, it's probably going to cost this old man his job and his pension and make this scallywag some money. Sucks but this is America #equalrights

Youth these days think they can do and say anything they want, with no respect for anything or anyone. I for one am glad it happened. If someone spits on you, that is simple battery where I'm from. The bus driver was in his right to knock the crap out of her and I'm glad he did. Now she'll think twice before she does another idiotic move like that

No man should hit a female under any circumstances. However, she shouldn't have took action to spit and choke him. I feel like they both should have to suffer the consequences

Here's the longer video. She still seems to be the aggressor and jeopardizes the safety of the passengers on the bus by harassing the driver while he's driving.

In New York that girl would be facing 7 years in jail. She provoked the man by spitting in him assaulting him and making threats. How can any person in their right mind think that it's ok for anyone to behave that way and not get hit back it was a defensive reaction. ( in this country woman are equal to men or so I keep hearing but when a man protects him self from an aggressive woman I don't hear the equality card any more and that's ridiculous )

Let the man keep his job. We need people who aren't afraid to stand up for what is right and what is just. We need to start encouraging these types of thoughts. Although fighting is wrong we can't keep letting people think that they are above the law. It's here to keep us all safe.

This is simply a sign of the times and how we as a society have spiraled downward...in terms of respect, behavior, and morality.... at an alarming pace. It also demonstrates how the media can manipulate the general public by not accurately and fairly portraying the entire situation in earnest and preying on their sympathy to paint one person as good or bad. It's obvious this 'girl' picked a losing battle to fight. And having seen the ENTIRE video clip I wholeheartedly say she deserved exactly what she got, and I bet she'll think twice before disrespecting a REAL adult again. Simply put...victims are a product of cimcumstance, NOT CONSEQUENCE!

So the next time you want to 'play' adult...whether you're a man or a woman....be adult enough to finish the game whether you win or lose, and take complete responsibility for your actions.

I love how the news leaves out the part of her talking * , than hitting him before he gets up. Always want the public to have different views other than the truth. Its clear the female thought she was hot * , wanted to show off in front of the bus with her "n*gga this, n*gga that" talk like she is going to mess him up, and clearly got what she deserved. Maybe the bus driver could have handled it differently, however when you are driving a bus with people and are attacked, female or not you of course there will be a reaction because they are putting others safety at risk. And I think its * that he is on unpaid suspension. This country is F*CKED UP

First of all she was going to get on the bus and didn't have her money ready Then she hit the man people have disagreements and it can get heated fine but you shouldn't hit anyone and if you do you should be prepared to fight women think they can hit a man but not get hit back but they want to be equal this man is from a different time when women were more respectable and couldn't speak out. He will get fired because whites conservatives/ business men will say it's still not right and she will sue the city for millions that they don't have lol she doesn't seem smart but could this have been planned think about she is going to get bank so to her it was worth it and she deserved the punch no theories but what if he was in on it she is rat I know she has been in hood rat fights she knows what was coming

Her actions were uncalled for but if it were a man getting nagged by his gf, officers would have had his * under the jail. You dont hit women regardless of what they do. If she touched him, he needs to call the police at the first sign of a threat, not continue to take her threats and proceed to make his own. Hes a grown man.

First of all I do not condone hitting, whether it is a woman hitting a man or a man hitting a woman. As a child, my mom has always taught me if someone hit you, you hit them back. However, as we get older we have to understand the text of that statement, though it stills applies to this day (I think)! I personally think that the uppercut was an impulsive act. Women always think they can hit a man and get away with it! Not true. And it's so classless that she would go as far as spitting on him. I dnt care what any one say! That's the most degrading thing anyone can do. Plus it's disgusting! She claimed she was looking for money, yet she spend minutes arguing! It only take a couple of seconds to find that! Hell she should have been had her money out! Everyone know you have to pay to ride the bus, even the people who don't ride the bus. She trying to sue because she is embarrassed didn't think it would happen! She dnt deserve nothing but that UPPERCUT!

And not only in the article, but in the video too, lol. They just cut that little clip out--pretty convenient. And she couldn't even answer the reporter's question.

Also love how these writers forgot to mention the fact that she attacked a elderly public worker while he was on duty. Has anyone seen the amount of videos of bus drivers getting attacked by passengers? They don't get any protection? Why would this man be punished for defending himself on his JOB?

And please, writers, be a little less obvious with whose side you're on with a informational article. The readers shouldn't have it shoved down their throats--especially when they know the other side to the story.

Comment #58.1 by: Tedmac on 15 Oct 2012, 13:11 GMT

In my opinion a person has a right to protect themselves if confronted or threaten, the first law of nature is self-preservation. The actions of the young woman was very disrespectful to the elder man and the passengers, as well as the company and city providing the service of transportation. The conduct of both persons actions could have been conducted in a better manner, however endangering the lives of passengers by spitting on and choking the driver he acted accordingly. He asked her to get behind the yellow line she ignored him he asked her to leave him alone and she provoked him with insults. The exchange of vocal insults from both parties unnecessary unprofessional coming from the driver. I conclude with everyone has a bad day from time to time. If you are having a bad day does not give you the right to ruin the day of others. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you treat others how you would like to be treated in this case the young woman would have been choked and spat on while being verbally abused.

Comment #59 by: Relle on 15 Oct 2012, 11:48 UTC reply to this comment

I think we need to take out the fact that she's a woman and just look at the situation as two individuals having an altercation. Of course it looks terrible, because it is a man hitting a woman. But if she was actually a man would we say the bus driver was wrong? No. She absolutely provoked the whole situation. He didn't come about the situation in the in best way, but then again how many men would've been able to control themselves with a woman testing their manhood in front of a crowd. Not many.

The guy is justified. He has personal right to defend himself against man, man being male or female. She iniated the situation and escalated it herself. People just need to learn manners again, respecting others couldn't hurt either.

Hello? First off, spitting on people is in fact attempted murder in civilized states. In some states touching a bus driver is a federal offense...he is the loser. 1 she is still a woman and a MAN would have done the correct thing by pulling over and contacting police. What a punk-a move. I hope he loses everything for at least not acting like a man (which if it was a crime, there would be alot more prison crowding. She is sooooo wrong on so many levels but from a legal stance, she moved away and no longer posed a threat, he walks up and punches her. His poor mate (male or female) probably wakes up screaming up in the middle of night every night! In his words, she wanted to act like a man, well at least one of them were acting as one. I can't imagine what kind of germs she might have had in her saliva! If ANYONE spit on me, bet I would indeed kick their a** too! She was warned by the bus driver not to spit on him or else! She was in the wrong.......by starting the altercation and putting everyone else in danger by distracting the bus driver. She clearly grabbed a person by the throat who was at the time operating a bus that was jammed full of people. She could have killed everyone on the bus and around the bus. All I saw in the video was a bus operator protecting the passengers and defending himself. I find it completely insane that people think he should have allowed her to keep physically attacking him, which would have just increased the danger to him and every other person on and around the bus which she was intentionally creating through her actions.

Comment #86 by: Diamond on 17 Oct 2012, 02:10 UTC reply to this comment

This is so unfortunate for both party's. If you watch the video this young women is spewing one filthy derogatory word behind the next. Then it appears she goes toward the driver. Assuming that she either spit / hit (or both) on the driver. That's when he stopped the bus & got up & preceded to deliver this forceful punch to her face. Honestly, I have a hard time watching the video. While I an against a man hitting a women. I'm eqaully against all abuse of any form - perpetrated on anybody male or female. The driver, though he didn't start the dispute, he had a choice to handle things differently. Now this young women was not innocent but didn't deserve the beat down she got. This girl was rough & out of control. In fact, she was a potential detriment to the safety of all the other passengers on the bus. In my opinion, they were both at fault. They both should bear the responsibility, as well as offer apologies. RTA was right to suspend the driver until a thorough investigation is done. At the same time, if this young women plans to sue, I wouldn't be surprised because we live in a sue society. she doesn't deserve any monetary benefits for her awful behavior. That's a problem in our country, people are rewarded for bad behavior. In the end, it doesn't make her aware that she started the whole thing. She needs help in the way of behavior therapy. The bus driver needs as well for anger management. At some point, the driver should be allowed to return back to work only after a specified time of completing theraphy for anger issues. In the end, we all have to look at our own behavior & how it effect others. They both need to do some work on themselves because both contributes to the ourcome. Personally, I'm glad that it didn't end up worse, if you know what I mean. As a concerned citizen I will pray for both the driver & the young women that God grants them understanding & peace.

This women did not back down, there is nothing showing that she was searching thru a purse looking for money. She could have gotten off the bus, gotten her money out of the purse, and taken the next bus. She continued to stand in the isle and verbally abuse this driver, she was disrespectful, refused to leave the bus when asked and the ultimate insult is when she spit in this mans face. The driver should not have lost his job, over this. The ultimate insult is spitting in another persons face and it is assault, she assaulted him first. Where is the support for him. Her behavior provoked this entire incident. Now she plays the victim..
Lesson learned, pretend you don't have bus fare, then argue with the driver long enough to get him in a rage, then spit in his face, he gets fired and you get airtime playing the victim roll.

Not only should she be charged with assault on the elderly, there should be additional charges for putting everyone else on the bus in potential harm.

Comment #92 by: V. on 26 Oct 2012, 04:32 UTC reply to this comment

Let me start off by saying that I am a staunch feminist. Females are generally a bit smaller than males on average and so when the average man hits the average woman, it does more damage than when the average woman hits the average man. In that sense, men should be cautious when engaging in a physical confrontation with a female because you can cause injuries that do not heal properly which mean you can accidentally create a permanent disability or even death as a result of defending your ego which is not nearly as valuable as your life. In fact, you will regret your actions if you come to realize that you putting your hands on a woman out of anger caused her disability or death when it was really a spat over $2.

That being said, no person has the right to a free bus ride or to free stuff. Women do not have the right to hit a man out of anger with the expectation that he will not retaliate because she's smaller than him. Hitting a person is not the right thing to do. It's foolish. What if he turned his head and she took out his eye when she really only wanted to slap him? What if he had some kind of medical condition and her punching him or grabbing his throat caused serious injury to him all because she can't wait 30 minutes for the next bus to come around or even *gasp* walk 7 or 8 blocks? This is not a good enough reason to put your hands on anyone out of anger. Plus, he was driving. What if you hitting him caused him to veer the bus off a bridge, killing you and everyone else on the bus? Was 30 minutes or $2 really worth it?

I don't subscribe to the whole "respect your elders" thing. Just because you're older than I am doesn't mean you've earned my respect or even worthy of respect. Just because you're bigger than I am or a man doesn't mean you deserve my respect. You don't. That's not what I'm arguing, it's the wrong argument to make. It's about priorities. This young woman and the bus driver had screwed up, self-righteous priorities which led to an unnecessary physical confrontation.

When a bus driver tells you to exit the bus and you refuse, you are trespassing. When you assault a bus driver on his bus after he has instructed you to exit, you have just invited him to take physical action to remove you from the bus. This does not mean that he should have thrown the meanest uppercut of his life, but it does mean that if he were to bear hug her and throw her off the bus, he'd be completely in the right. He is removing a trespasser and enforcing the rules of the bus.

I used to ride on a city bus every single day to and from work. There were days that I plain forgot my wallet. In that case, I told the bus driver, "oh gee, I forgot my wallet, but I take this bus every day. Is it Ok if I ride?" and most of the time, they let me ride for free on those rare cases that I didn't have my bus fare. The passengers who argued and became belligerent were often threatened with police action or physical removal (though it was never ultimately necessary).

So, in summary - it is never appropriate to put your hands on someone out of anger. It is not appropriate for a man - or anyone - to act beyond what is absolutely necessary to contain a physical threat from a person who is 50-100 lbs smaller than he is. People do not need to subscribe to traditional thinking to have common sense - to treat people with a basic level of courtesy and dignity. This case isn't about equal opportunity, that is an absolutely ridiculous argument to make. It's about priorities. Both of these people had poor priorities and both should be punished for their actions. They each assaulted someone unnecessarily for an absolutely stupid reason. She obviously did not pose a real and credible threat to him, so he didn't need to punch her and grab her hair, and she had no business starting a physical confrontation because the bus driver who told her to get off the bus made a mean comment about her face. Good lord, you need to have thicker skin to survive this world. Try being a staunch feminist for a day and you will be insulted on a very regular basis by ignorant people. If I punched and spat on every person who insulted me for any variety of reasons, my arms would be sore and I would be totally dehydrated from spitting on people.

I am a woman...and I agree she got what she deserved. I've taught my own daughters to not just hit on a man bc they assume he won't retaliate in a way he sees fit. Point blank....I think she got what was coming, especially after running her mouth looking like a little trifling chicken head. What an embarrassment. I despise a woman without some measure of class.
He should smash her again for possibly losing a 22 year job. Ladies please lets train our children how to conduct themselves in society!
